Marijuana has been used for thousands of years as a medicine. Recent studies have shown that it is very effective in treating symptoms of diseases such as cancer, AIDS, arthritis , glaucoma and multiple sclerosis. It is also used to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy in cancer patients. Here, we’ve compiled a list of the benefits of medical marijuana:
1) Cancer Treatment
Studies have shown that THC, the active chemical substance in marijuana, slows tumor growth and promotes cancer cell death – while leaving healthy cells untouched. A Harvard Medical School study reported by CNN states that “the active ingredient in marijuana cuts tumor growth in common lung cancer in half and significantly reduces the ability of the cancer to spread.”
The Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that marijuana ” may have benefits in treating the pain and nausea associated with cancer and its treatments”
2) Arthritis Treatment
Studies have shown that medical cannabis is extremely effective in relieving chronic pain associated with arthritis, an inflammation of the joints. The Journal of Pain reported that 85 percent of patients with arthritis who used medical marijuana reported a reduction in pain!
3) HIV/AIDS Treatment
Aids patients have been using marijuana to help reduce nausea and increase their appetites. A study published by The American Journal of Health says that states with Medical Marijuana laws “had a 24.8 percent lower mean annual HIV death rate than states without such laws.”
4) Glaucoma Treatment
Marijuana is effective at reducing the intraocular pressure that causes glaucoma. Every 42 seconds someone develops blindness from glaucoma , a leading cause of blindness, including blindness in Americans over the age of 55. Marijuana helps lower ocular pressure better than any other known substance.
5) Multiple Sclerosis Treatment
Cannabis is effective at reducing the tingling, pain, spasticity, and other symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. A study published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported that marijuana reduces nighttime sleep disruptions in people suffering from multiple sclerosis.
6) Epilepsy Treatment
Over two dozen studies have shown that marijuana is effective at reducing epileptic seizures.
7) Alzheimer’s Treatment
Marijuana has been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation concludes, “Marijuana may also decrease agitation , depression , and anxiety in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.”
8) Sleep Aid
Cannabis is effective at treating insomnia. THC, an active ingredient of marijuana is a sedative that reduces anxiety and helps induce sleep.
9) Chronic Pain Treatment
A 2014 study published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine found that cannabis reduced pain by activating the body’s opioid system. In addition, a 2003 study in Pain found that subjects who consumed cannabis experienced a significant reduction in pain intensity when compared with those who didn’t receive it.
10) Anorexia Treatment
Medical marijuana is effective at stimulating the appetite of AIDS, cancer , and anorexia patients. A University of Michigan study reported that medical cannabis users have increased caloric intake and improved nutrition.
11) Migraine Treatment
There are claims that marijuana is effective at treating migraine headaches. Some examples of these reports include a 2011 study published in the journal Neurology, finding that migraine attacks were reduced by 64 percent among patients who used cannabis compared with those who used placebo .
12) UV Radiation Treatment for Psoriasis
Medical marijuana has proven to be effective at reducing the inflammation and itching associated with psoriasis. A study published by the American Academy of Dermatology found that cannabinoids “significantly reduced both the severity of the inflammatory and itch scores” in a group of 50 patients with plaque-type psoriasis over a four week period.
13) Multiple Sclerosis Treatment
In addition to reducing the tingling, pain, spasticity, and other symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis, cannabis has also been shown to slow the progression of degenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s.
14) Tourette Syndrome Treatment
Cannabis is effective at treating Tourette syndrome, a neurological condition that causes involuntary movements and vocalizations.
15) Alcoholism Treatment
A 2014 study published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment reported that alcohol use significantly dropped among cannabis users. The researchers found, “That illicit drugs were consumed by only 16 percent of those who smoked marijuana compared with 69 percent … for those who didn’t use marijuana.”
There are a wide variety of medical marijuana benefits, and they vary from treating chronic pain to reducing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
